A significant economic presence: the size of the Portuguese NPI sector In 2006, nonprofit institutions (NPIs) in Portugal employed nearly 185,000 workers that represents 4.3% of Portugal’s total employment. These workers produced goods and services worth over €5.7 billion, 14 and ultimately contributed €2.7 billion of Gross Value Added 15 to the national economy.
